Israel's Bank Beinleumi has refused to accept money from Russian businessman Sergei Adoniev, who wanted to pay for the services of an Israeli lawyer who defended him in a legal dispute with another bank. Adoniev, an Israeli citizen who has lived there since 2019, faces US sanctions in 2023 along with his sons Philip and Luka under the Magnitsky list.
At the time the sanctions were imposed, NIS 2.5 million were frozen in his accounts at Bank Leumi, and he hired lawyer Shlomo Kasuto to resolve the issue.
Because of the sanctions, Bank Beinleumi rejected a €100,000 transfer that Adonyev wanted to send to his lawyer. Kasuto went to court to have the transfer accepted, but the case is still pending. Meanwhile, Adonyev is worth an estimated $800 million and is considered close to Russian President Putin.
