On December 10, 2024, on Human Rights Day, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky stated that The Assad and Putin regimes are linked by violence and repression. He emphasized: Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression helps protect human rights around the world.
“Brave” Assad fled to Putin. Where will Putin run away? — Zelensky said December 10, 2024 in his message on Human Rights Day.
“This Human Rights Day is accompanied by horrific photographs of Syrian prisons and dungeons opened after Assad’s escape. People there were humiliated for many years. Men and women. They were beaten, tortured, raped. Thousands and thousands of people went through this factory of violence.
The Assad regime has relied exclusively on violence for decades. And this is exactly what all the regimes that Putin supports are like. We saw the same prisons, dungeons, indescribable violence, humiliation, beatings, torture, rape and other crimes on our territory in every settlement occupied by the Russian invaders.
Russia is a prison statewhich can contain someone else’s, stolen land only thanks to the prisons and dungeons that it places there.
Since the beginning of the Russian occupation, tanks have always been followed by repression and torture. We first saw this on our soil in Crimea in 2014, when the Russian occupation led to repression of the indigenous people, the largest community in Ukraine – the Crimean Tatars, as well as journalists and political figures. Russia then continued its horrific human rights abuses in the occupied Donbass, including the infamous Izolyatsia prison.
Since February 2022, Russia has extended these practices to all other occupied territories. The atrocities grew in scale and cruelty.
That is why we, Ukrainians, are so touched when we see Syrians coming out of Assad’s prisons and dungeons.
Assad and Putin are not just vassals and overlords. They are accomplices in violence. Dictators like Assad cannot survive without dictators like Putin. And Putin will try to avenge the fall of Assad.
That is why we need unity and strength to resist regimes that sow only humiliation and leave behind only suffering, pain and ruins. By helping Ukraine fight against Russian dictatorship, the international community is helping many other regions of the world restore security and achieve protection from violence.
There must be punishment for these horrendous atrocities and human rights violations. In fact, Only Putin and Assad deserve to be in prison, not those innocent people they have been imprisoning for years“.
International significance of Human Rights Day
On December 10, the world celebrates Human Rights Day, established in 1948 in honor of the UN adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This day emphasizes the equality and freedom of every person, regardless of race, religion or nationality.
However, 2024 was the year when the concept of human rights again found itself at the center of tragic events. Ukraine and the international community drew attention to the crimes of the Assad and Putin regimes. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has linked these regimes into a single concept of factories of violence, where basic human freedoms are violated.
Historical Perspective: From the Declaration to the Present
Human Rights Day was created to remember the tragedies of the past and prevent them in the future. However, reality shows that the principles of the 1948 Declaration remain a challenge:
- Example from Syria: thousands of people suffered torture and humiliation in the prisons of the Assad regime.
- Example from Russia: Crimea, Donbass and other territories are suffering from the Kremlin’s policies.
Table: Repressions of Assad and Putin
| Characteristic | Assad regime | Putin regime |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Methods | Prisons, torture, murder | Repression, secret prisons |
| Main victims | Syrian opposition, women | Crimean Tatars, activists |
| International condemnation | UN and US sanctions | US, EU, G7 sanctions |
| Period of repression | 2000s – 2024 | 2014 – present |
