Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov accused Israel of pursuing “unrealistic goals” during the operation in the Gaza Strip and once again demanded that the Israeli side end military operations. He July 28, 2024 spoke at a press conference following the visit to ASEAN.
“Israel, through Prime Minister Netanyahu, has repeatedly responded to calls for an immediate ceasefire by saying that it will not stop until Hamas is completely destroyed.
In my opinion, and this opinion is shared by many of my colleagues, it is an unrealistic task to completely destroy an organization that exists and that has sufficient capabilities and sufficient support, I would say, including from the Muslim world…
The tragedy of the Palestinian people, 40 thousand civilians died in ten months, terrible figures, most of them women and children. My representative was in Israel the other day, conveyed the relevant signals, and we will continue the work. The efforts have not yet been successful, but we must continue,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov “noticed”that “some countries” are trying to prepare new compromise proposals that would end the violence in stages, “given that Israel refuses an immediate ceasefire.”
“Some Arab countries, Egypt, Qatar are working together with the Americans, they are also holding some meetings with the Israelis. It is not quite right, in my opinion, that the Palestinians themselves are excluded from contacts that are ultimately intended to determine their fate. And in this sense, we will continue to promote the restoration of Palestinian unity,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.
