On August 20, 2024, Representative Jaamal Bowman expressed hope that Vice President Kamala Harris would call for an arms embargo on Israel before the U.S. presidential election in November. Bowman, a critic of Israel's handling of the conflict with Hamas, noted that Harris had taken a tougher stance on the issue than President Biden, though that was largely rhetorical.

He said the next step should be to approve a suspension of American arms sales to Israel to protect the Palestinian population.

“She was the first to call for a cease-fire, she has said it many times. An arms embargo is the next step,” Bowman said at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Politico previously noted that if Harris were to become U.S. president, she would likely support Israel and other allies in the Middle East. However, on the issue of Israel’s war against Hamas, Harris expressed more sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians, which could reassure Arab-American voters and others concerned about Biden’s support for Israel’s military action in Gaza.
