In the area of the Alexandrion fortress, archaeologists discovered a rare treasure of coins from the Hasmonean times, minted under King Alexander Yannai. The total number of coins found was 160 pieces. The excavations shed light on the historical era of the Hasmoneans, whose reign is associated with the name of Alexander Jannaeus, as described by Arkeonews.
The treasure was found at an ancient site on the ancient route to the Alexandrion fortress. This place, according to experts from the Institute of Archeology. Zinman at the University of Haifa, was a key point on the old trade and tourism network. The coins were minted in 80/79. BC in the 25th year of the reign of Alexander Jannaeus. They had a special design featuring an octagonal star and an anchor with Greek inscriptions on the back.
According to scientists, such large collections of coins are rarely found during archaeological excavations, which makes the find especially valuable. The coins were likely hidden in a leather pouch or similar organic material that had decomposed over time. Other artifacts such as a ritual bath and a reservoir were found at the same excavated site, indicating its strategic and religious significance.
Alexander Jannaeus, also known as Jonathan, was a descendant of Mattathias, who played an important role in the rebellion against Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Alexander's fortress in the Jordan Valley was destroyed during the Jewish revolt against Rome. Work is currently underway to preserve and develop the site so that it becomes accessible to the public as part of Israel's archaeological heritage.
