The leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar are demanding that Israel and Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, return to deadlocked talks on the Gaza war. Mediators said on August 8 that “only the details” of a ceasefire and the release of hostages remained to be discussed.
“There is no more time to waste and no excuses to either side for further delays. It is time to release the hostages, initiate a ceasefire and implement this agreement,” the joint statement said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on August 8: “In accordance with the proposal of the United States and the mediators, Israel will send a negotiating team on August 15 to a location to be determined to finalize the details of the implementation of the framework agreement.”
As of early July, Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas announced that they had resumed negotiations through intermediaries on the terms of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Until now, all attempts to conclude a truce have failed. Israel is interested in the release of hostages on the condition of maintaining freedom of action in Gaza. Hamas demands a complete cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory.
