The UN Security Council is set to vote today to extend the presence of peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon for a year, demanding an end to fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. The resolution would seek to implement the terms of a 2006 resolution to avoid further escalation and possible full-scale conflict.
The planned draft resolution would extend UNIFIL's mandate until August 31, 2025, beginning with the mission's establishment in 1978 to support the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon. The mission's expansion after the 2006 war aims to help Lebanese forces establish control of the south and bring an end to hostilities.
The Associated Press recalls that the resolution to be voted on strongly calls on the parties to take steps to de-escalate and restore calm and stability along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
