A recent poll in the US found that most Americans do not support the idea of sending troops to defend Israel in the event of a serious threat. The study, conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, found that 55% of respondents oppose such a move, while 41% support it. A majority of Republicans (55%) expressed support, while the figure for Democrats was 35%.
The poll was conducted from late June to early July and included more than 1,000 American adults. Interestingly, these results were obtained before the assassination of the Hamas chairman and the head of Hezbollah. Despite the events and the growing Iranian threat, support for direct defense of Israel has reached its lowest level in a decade.
The survey thus points to a shift in public sentiment and a decline in support for military aid to Israel. Importantly, this occurred in the context of complex political developments and increasing threats.
