Macron urged Iran's new president not to support Russia's “aggressive war” against Ukraine and to do everything possible to avoid a military escalation between Israel and Lebanon

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, July 29, 2024, during talks with new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, called on him not to support Russia's “aggressive war” against Ukraine.

Macron also asked Pezeschkian to do everything possible to avoid a military escalation between Israel and Lebanon following the missile attack on the Golan Heights.

The French leader has called on Iran to stop supporting destabilising factors in the Middle East, warning of the devastating consequences of a new war for a region already on the brink of conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

After congratulating Pezeschkian on his election victory on July 5, Macron called for necessary changes in Iran. He also stressed the need to stop the escalation of Iran's nuclear program and called for a diplomatic solution. Macron demanded the release of three French citizens held in Iranian prisons, considering it necessary to improve relations between Paris and Tehran.
