People's Theater “Shacharit” gave the audience in Netanya an unforgettable evening by presenting the performance “Matchmaking on Goncharovka” based on a Ukrainian play Kvitki-Osnovyanenko.
The production took place on January 14, 2025 on the Heikhal HaTarbut stage in the original language – Ukrainian to a full house, and, as many noted, it became a real holiday for everyone. This was organized with the participation of Associations “Natives from Ukraine in Netanya”.
The participants made the costumes themselves, and it was almost impossible to find out who was hiding behind each image.
Humor, songs, dances and jokes created a festive mood. The beautiful and melodious Ukrainian language sounded.
“Matchmaking on Goncharovka» is a famous comedy written by the Ukrainian classic Grigory Kvitka-Osnovyanenko in 1835.

Odarka Shkurat quarrels with her husband Prokop because he drinks. Soon Kandzyuba approaches them and offers to marry their daughter Ulyanka to his son Stetsko. At first Odarka and her husband are against it – because everyone knows that Stetsko has no rivets in his head, but in view of his wealth they agree.
Ulyanka herself is against such a marriage, because she likes Alexey, but he is a serf. Alexey understands that they want to force Ulyana into marriage with a fool and beats Stetsko so that he gives up the girl, but Stetsko does not agree because he is very afraid of his father. With the help of Alexei's uncle's tricks, Ulyana marries Alexei, and Stetsko is given pumpkins.
The play surprisingly combines humor, everyday wisdom and deep humanity. The plot is filled with funny situations, vivid dialogues and sincere emotions, which makes it relevant even after almost two centuries.
How did Shacharit bring this classic to the stage?
- The costumes, which were created by the actors themselves, emphasized the authenticity of the images.
- Musical and dance numbers added liveliness and celebration.
- Directing Lilia Bogatyreva stood out for its accuracy and attention to detail, which made the performance lively and dynamic.
What do the audience say?
With my impressions January 15, 2025 Irina Medvedeva sharedwho became one of the spectators of the evening:
“Life is wonderful at any time of the year,
It is given only once,
And, despite the weather outside,
The mood must be Spring!I want life to always be a holiday, but for this you need to come up with reasons. In the association of immigrants from Ukraine in Netanya, such an occasion was the play “Matchmaking on Goncharovka,” which was held to a full house in the Heikhal HaTarbut hall.
Is it possible to revive a comedy written almost 200 years ago? It turns out that it is possible! The participants made their own costumes, and humor, songs, dances and jokes created a festive mood. The beautiful and melodious Ukrainian language sounded.”
Guests and importance
The evening was attended by honored guests:
- Advisor to the Ambassador of Ukraine Gennady Breskalenko.
