December 25, 2024 Ukrainian duet Alibi Sistersconsisting of Anna and Angelina Zavalsky, presented a new song “Honey Hanukkah” Honeyky Hanuka (The Klezmatics cover) .
Performed on Yiddish, Ukrainian and English languagesthis composition was recorded in winter Kyiv, despite the rocket attacks that have become an invariable part of the daily life of Ukrainians.
The song is inspired by the historical project of the American klezmer group The Klezmatics and became a symbol of cultural unity and resilience of the peoples of Ukraine and the Jewish diaspora.
“Today, here in Kyiv, amidst missile strikes and the unbearable horror of war, we continue to live and sing in our hometown, paying tribute to the traditions of strong peoples,” shared the members of the duet.
Today Anna and Angelina Zavalsky actively participate in charity concerts, part of the proceeds from which go to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In addition to musical projects, the sisters plan to create a series of documentaries about prominent Jews whose destinies are connected with Ukraine.
Alibi Sisters: from pop music to klezmer traditions
Duet Alibi Sisters (formed on April 6, 2001) was originally known as a popular Ukrainian pop artist. However, in recent years the sisters reoriented their creative activities, focusing on the study and popularization of Jewish culture.
Anna and Angelina began performing klezmer music, which has deep roots in the Eastern European Jewish tradition, especially in Ukraine. Anna Zavalskaya notes:
“We are Ukrainians who sing in Yiddish. When we perform these songs, it’s as if we are returning a lost tradition to our native land, and in this we feel our mission.”
Hanukkah in three languages: a symbol of the unification of cultures
The composition “Honey Hanukkah” is not just a song, but a real cultural bridge between peoples. The lyrics of this Hanukkah composition, originally written in English, have been translated into Ukrainian and Yiddish, highlighting the shared history and interconnectedness of the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples.

The recording of the song and the shooting of the video took place in Kyiv during the war. Despite daily threats, Alibi Sisters find the strength not only to continue their musical career, but also to direct the proceeds from ticket sales to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Angelina Zavalskaya emphasized:
“Music in these difficult times is our way of telling the world about our struggle and our faith in victory.”
Charity and new projects
