On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, was charged in France. He faces up to 10 years in prison for operating an online platform where illegal transactions take place. French media reported six violations, including administering an online platform for illegal transactions, providing encryption without declaring it, refusing to hand over encryption keys, participating in the distribution of child pornography and drugs, committing crimes in a group of people, and refusing to provide information for wiretapping permitted by law.

Pavel Durov is currently under judicial supervision in France and is required to post bail of 5 million euros. He is prohibited from leaving the country and from appearing in police custody twice a week. France launched an investigation into Telegram back in February 2024 due to failure to respond to legal requests. The court has ended Pavel Durov's detention for questioning and indictment.

Pavel Durov was arrested without political motives, as stated by French President Emmanuel Macron. An arrest warrant for Durov and his brother Nikolai was issued back in March 2024, Politico reports.
