“But this too shall pass…”
This UN has gone bad, and no new one has been brought in. Seems like it’s not really needed.
Russia is no longer an aggressor, according to the UN.
Indeed: to seize 20% of another country’s territory, destroy hundreds of villages and towns, kill and torture civilians, not to mention prisoners of war — is this not an example of a civilized country?
And the most outrageous, writes in his blog Boryslav Bereza, public and political figure, Ukrainian Jew, citizen of Ukraine, and according to some sources, also from Israel, that “the participation in this shameful farce in the UN was taken by the USA — our former ally, and Israel, which has suffered greatly from Hamas, actively supporting Russia.”
“The world has gone mad, but where are the doctors?”
The day before, at the UN General Assembly, a vote took place on a resolution proposed by Ukraine and EU countries to mark the third anniversary of Russian aggression. After this vote, we have results that will have consequences in the future. And it’s not about the resolution itself, which practically has no effect, like the powerless UN. The question is how the votes were distributed.
The resolution expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and it was supported by the EU countries and other nations. But the USA, along with Russia, North Korea, Argentina, Mali, and Nicaragua, voted “against” this resolution.
And Israel.
Even Iran abstained.
However, Israel voted in sync with the USA. By the way, as always. But this story is quite different. It showed that “today the foreign policy vectors of Ukraine and Israel are opposite. Israel is following the course of Trump’s USA, and Ukraine is going in the other direction with the EU”.
“Yes, today someone may recall that Ukraine almost always votes against Israel in the UN. But this has nothing to do with the vote because this time the vote was not based on conscience, but on interests. Unfortunately. And this says that Israel will vote for everything initiated by the USA, while Ukraine will vote in sync with the EU initiatives, which often have an anti-Israel character. The likelihood of this is quite high, and I really don’t like it.”
“Trump today chose a strategy of rapprochement with the Kremlin and does not call Russia an aggressor. Therefore, the USA does not vote for this resolution, and Israel plays along.”
“Who cares about my thoughts in the UN?”
“Although I know for sure that most Israelis, according to all surveys, support Ukraine, and only 8% of Americans have a positive attitude towards Russians and Russia. But Trump today chose a strategy of rapprochement with the Kremlin and does not call Russia an aggressor, so the USA does not vote for this resolution, and Israel plays along.”
“I find this very unpleasant. It makes me sick. And even the flood of calls and messages from friends in Israel will not fix the situation. I already know that most Israelis are for Ukraine, and the anti-Semites among Ukrainians are deviants. But the way the situation is developing does not please me. In the future, this will make friends of Ukraine in Israel and friends of Israel in Ukraine mourn even more.”
In any case, this can be fixed over time. And looking at how, for example, Azerbaijan votes for all anti-Israel resolutions in the UN while simultaneously being one of Israel’s largest real allies and partners, we should not look at the voting but at what happens outside the UN between our countries.
