Borrell met with the Iranian Foreign Minister to discuss the conflict in the Middle East and possible cooperation with Moscow.

Josep Borrell, the European Union's top diplomat, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

They discussed the conflict in the Middle East, Iran's cooperation with Moscow and Tehran's nuclear program. The announcement was made on the website of the European External Action Service.

Borrell stressed the need to reduce the risk of escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Otherwise, he said, the entire region would face catastrophic consequences, he noted. The statement reads:

“The agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages should be an important step to improve the situation for civilians in the Gaza Strip.”
