Institute for the Study of War (ISW) emphasizes Russia's dependence on Iran, noting that Russian officials continue to coordinate and cooperate militarily with Iran. As ISW analysts note, one of the reasons is concern about Russian interests in the region, but not only that.
An Iranian diplomat (yeah) told IranWire that Russia opposes Iranian strikes that could result in civilian deaths because of the large number of Russian citizens (time to save?) living in Israel.
At the same time, Russia is helping Iran improve its air defenses against Israeli attacks. The New York Times reported that Russia has begun supplying advanced radars and air defense systems to Iran. Iranian media previously reported that Iran was trying to buy Russian air defense systems to improve its air defense network and protect itself from an Israeli strike.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Russia is expanding its cooperation with Iran, particularly through its military partnership. The ISW analysis states:
“Russia is trying to influence Western decision-making in Russia's favor by pushing the West to withhold further military aid to Ukraine.”
Russia's decision to provide Iran with radars and air defense systems that could be useful in Ukraine highlights Russia's dependence on Iran for other critical weapons. This includes precision weapons and components, ISW said.
According to The New York Times, Iran, preparing for an attack on Israel, asked Russia for modern air defense systems and radars. Israeli media reported that Russia has already transferred Iskander missile systems and Murmansk-BN electronic warfare systems to Iran. The weapons were transferred using an Il-76 military transport aircraft, which has made multiple flights from Russia to Iran.
