An alley named after the Ukrainian couple Shchepanyuk appeared in Jerusalem.
I feel excited to be here on opening day, I wrote Elena Zelenskaya. After all, the history preceding the appearance of this alley is striking in its humanity.
For many months, a family from the Lviv region hid their neighbors, the Jewish Weiss family, from the Nazis. She received the honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations, as did more than 2,600 Ukrainian families who helped save Jews.
Today this alley unites Ukraine and Israel, just as our countries are united by a common value: there is nothing more important than human life.
Fully:
“Every day this woman gave us food, brought us water, helped with all her heart and generous heart. She was constantly under threat of death.”
This amazing story of salvation has begun in 1941 in the city of Borislav, Lviv region, when the spouses Yulia and Roman Szczepanyuk hid their Jewish neighbors, the Weiss family: mom, dad and three children, from the Nazis. They lived like this, risking themselves, for many months. Probably, this is exactly the kind of true salvation – not a bright film effect, but ordinary, daily work so that someone lives. And they succeeded!
The Weiss family escaped and after the liberation of the city moved to the new state of Israel, where one of the sons, Shevach Weiss, became a politician. He served as Speaker of the Knesset and was the Ambassador of the State of Israel to Poland.
The Weisses did not forget their rescuers: By decision of Yad Vashem, the Shchepanyuks were recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. This honorary title is awarded to people who, risking themselves, saved Jews from Nazi extermination. And now By decision of the Jerusalem municipality, the city will also have an alley named after the Shchepanyuk couple.”
Elena Zelenskaya took part in its grand opening today. There are more than 2,600 families recognized as Righteous Among the Nations in Ukraine. And now some of them, like all Ukrainians, are experiencing war and threat. Again.
It’s scary to realize that this is happening again in their lives, that once again an entire people is being destroyed in the middle of Europe.
When evil returns to the world, it is such simple human examples as the story of the Shchepanyuks that give hope – that in the darkest moment there is help, self-sacrifice, support. That every person, every family can resist and ultimately win.
