US officials predict a further escalation of fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon, which could lead to a full-scale war between them.

American officials told Politico, European Pravda writes. According to the Biden administration, de-escalation between Israel and Hezbollah will be difficult, especially after Israeli shelling.

Israel has said it will pressure Hezbollah militarily to accept a diplomatic solution that would allow Israelis to return to their homes in the north.

A U.S. official expects more shelling of Lebanon, including Beirut, and retaliation by Hezbollah against Israel, possibly through drone strikes. The fighting is expected to include assassinations of Hezbollah commanders, strikes on weapons depots, and further attacks on communications infrastructure. The White House remains unsure about the escalation between the sides, which have come close to conflict several times over the past year and have calmed down after diplomatic pressure.

The bombings of pagers and other communications equipment used by Hezbollah began on September 17 and 18, killing at least 37 people and wounding nearly 3,000. The White House says it did not support Israel in the operation.
