The stone tablet is about 1500 years old. It was found at the beginning of the 20th century and was first used as paving stones in one of the yards. This artifact of the ancient world remained forgotten for hundreds of years. Found in 1913 during excavations for a new railway line in what is now Israel. There were 10 biblical laws written on it, but only nine of them are visible now.
A stone tablet containing commandments from the Old Testament will be auctioned at Sotheby's in December for $2 million. The auction will take place on December 18, and the lot itself can be seen in the Sotheby's showroom in New York from December 5.
“This remarkable plaque has historical significance and connections to the beliefs that shaped Western civilization,” said Richard Austin of Sotheby's.
The sign weighs 115 pounds and stands 2 feet tall. It displays 20 lines of text related to Bible verses. In the Roman-Byzantine era, this artifact was created, and only now is it receiving the attention it previously cost.
