The 9th of Av (Tisha B'Av) is marred by tragic events throughout Jewish history and is a symbol of all the persecutions and misfortunes that befell the people of Israel.
This year 2024, the fast of 9 Av begins on the evening of August 12 (Tuesday).
This day is important for everyone, regardless of their personal level of observance, since the 9th of Av marked the end of the story of the people of Israel losing their country (army, capital, control over territory, judicial power, national symbols…) for 2,000 years, as well as the right to carry Jewish values, ideas and views at the national-state level.
The day is meant not only to remember grief, but also to inspire hope, restoration and future salvation.

- 2449 (1312 BCE) The sin of the spies, who caused panic among the Jews, leading to a rebellion against Moshe (Moses), due to which the creation of Israel was delayed for 40 years, and the Jews were sent into the desert.
- 3338 (423 BCE) The destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians and the exile of the Jews into Babylonian captivity for 70 years.
- 3828 CE (70 AD) The Roman conquest of Israel and the destruction of the Second Temple, the second exile of the Jews, which continues to this day.
- 3892 (132 AD) The Roman governor ordered the Temple Mount to be plowed to insult the Jews, leading to the 3-year Bar Kokhba revolt.
- 3895 (135 AD) Rome captured Beitar, after which the mass expulsion of Jews from the Land of Israel began.
- 4855 (1095) Beginning of the First Crusade, which resulted in the destruction of hundreds of Jewish communities in Europe and Israel and the killing of tens of thousands of Jews.
- 1240 – Mass burning of the Talmud and Jewish books in Paris.

- 1492 – Inquisition and expulsion of Jews from Spain.
- 1942 – The Nazi death camp Treblinka began operating.
- 2005 – expulsion of Jews from the Gaza Strip (Gush Katif) and northern Samaria.
Laws and customs of the 9th of Av:
- National day of mourning, on the eve (evening) of the 9th of Av, all entertainment venues are closed in Israel.
- Mourning begins at sunset and lasts 25 hours.
- Complete abstinence from food and drink.
- Abstaining from bathing.
- Abstinence from marital intimacy.
- The use of perfume is prohibited.
- It is prohibited to wear leather shoes.
- It is forbidden to work.
- You should sit on the floor or on a low bench (no higher than 30 cm).
- It is forbidden to study the Torah, for it is a source of joy.
