On January 20, 2025, the Harmony Cultural Center in Jerusalem will host a screening of the restored legendary Ukrainian animated film “Bobe Mayses.” The film tells a philosophical and funny story based on Jewish folklore.
Event organized Cinema club “Filmed in Ukraine”/ Cinema club “Created in Ukraine” with the support All-Israeli Association of Immigrants from Ukraine, Jerusalem Club And Ukrainian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv.
This is the first and currently the only animated film in Ukraine based on Jewish folklore.

Jerusalem opens its doors to a unique cultural event – a screening of a restored Ukrainian animated film “Bobe Mayses”. This event not only symbolizes the strengthening of cultural ties between Israel and Ukraine, but also demonstrates the deep historical connection between the Jewish and Ukrainian peoples.
The film, created in 1993 by director Elena Kasavina, was the first and only animated work of its kind inspired by Jewish folklore. Now this precious film is returning to viewers in an updated format, thanks to the many years of efforts of the director and a team of restorers.
Cultural heritage: why is Bobe Mayses so important?

The film takes viewers to a Jewish settlement where philosophical and comical events unfold. The main themes are greed, virtue and the difficult life of the community.
- Directorial debut of Elena Kasavina.
This film brought her international recognition and many awards, including the title of best animated film in Ukraine.
- Restoration and voice acting.
After many years of oblivion, the film was restored and re-sounded in the voice of the legendary actress Ada Rogovtseva.
“For more than three decades, the director dreamed that one day “Bobe Mayses” would appear on screens again in Ukrainian,” – notes the organizing team.

The event is organized by the Cinema Club “Shot in Ukraine” with the support of the All-Israel Association of People from Ukraine and the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv.
