An all-Ukrainian round table dedicated to the preservation and protection of Jewish cemeteries will be held in Ukraine. This is a unique initiative of the European Initiative for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries (ESJF) and will take place on 20 January on the Zoom platform.

The event promises to be an important step towards strengthening Ukrainian-Jewish ties.

Why is this important?

Jewish cemeteries are not only places of memory, but also important cultural and historical monuments. There are thousands of cemeteries preserved on the territory of Ukraine that need protection from destruction, vandalism and oblivion. Such projects emphasize respect for Jewish heritage and open up new opportunities for cultural dialogue.

Event program

The round table will open with a lecture by Katerina Malakhova, candidate of philosophical sciences, who will talk about the meaning and importance of protecting Jewish cemeteries.

The second stage of the meeting will be exchange of participants' experiences. The organizers invite everyone to tell us how they protect Jewish cemeteries in their cities or villages. It could be:

  • Organization of cleaning and maintenance of the territory;
  • Installation of fences;
  • Combating vandalism and illegal construction;
  • Conducting excursions or cultural events.

Each speaker will be given 5 minutes to present their project.


Who supports the initiative?

The organizer of the event is European Initiative for the Preservation of Jewish Treasures (ESJF). Since its founding in 2015, the organization has:

  • Installed fences on more than 300 cemeteries;
  • Collected a database from 4000 Jewish cemeteries in 10 European countries;
  • Conducts educational events to raise awareness.

The project is supported by:

  • German Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Institute of Oriental Studies named after. Crimean National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • United Jewish Community of Ukraine (ОЄОУ) is the largest organization representing the interests of the Jewish community of Ukraine.

Why participate?

The round table is an opportunity not only to share your experience, but also to hear the best practices for protecting cemeteries. Participants will be able to discuss:

  • How to preserve cultural heritage for future generations;
  • How to prevent acts of vandalism and destruction;
  • How to attract sponsors and donors to preserve objects.
