The U.S. Justice Department has indicted Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and other militants for the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, the first time U.S. law enforcement has formally sought to identify the perpetrators of the attacks.

The charges include conspiracy to provide support to a foreign terrorist group, conspiracy to murder American citizens, and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death. Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah are also accused of providing financial support and weapons for the attack.

Yahya Sinwar is hiding in the tunnels, and three of the six defendants are already dead, according to the Justice Ministry. The case was opened in February under the heading “secret” to arrest Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and became public after his death on Tuesday.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “Today’s charges are just one part of our efforts to combat Hamas. These actions will not be our last.” At the time, the White House announced a new proposal to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

A U.S. official said the charges would not affect the talks. The White House National Security Council said the hostage “executions” underscored the urgency of the talks.
