On August 30, 2024, Israeli forces killed a local Hamas commander in the city of Jenin. They are now in the third day of a major operation in the occupied West Bank. Border Police forces killed a local Hamas leader, Wassem Hazem, who was accused of shooting and bombing in the Palestinian territory, Reuters reports. Two other Hamas militants were killed in a drone strike as they tried to escape the car they were in. Hamas confirmed the deaths of all three men.
Recall that at the end of July, it became known that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was a key participant in the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, had died. Iran blamed Israel for this and threatened retaliation.
An IRGC spokesman said Iran's response to the killing of a Hamas leader in Tehran could take a long time, indicating Iran will not rush into the expected retaliation, raising fears of a regional war in the Middle East.
