Egypt could run out of water by 2050 due to intense heat and drought in the Middle East. Over the past 10 months, the world's attention has been drawn to Israel and the Gaza Strip due to the war that began with an attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. However, the problem of heat and water shortages has become more critical.
The heat index in Dubai reached 62 degrees Celsius in mid-July, while the temperature in the Grand Mosque in Mecca reached 51.6 degrees in late June. This has led to the death of more than 1,300 people, while in Egypt, temperatures have rarely dropped below 37 degrees since May, leading to illness and death.
Water shortages are projected to reduce the region's GDP by 14% by 2050. UNICEF has warned that Egypt could run out of water by 2025, putting the Nile River under strain. Water shortages threaten lives and the region's economy.
The climate crisis in North Africa is set to displace up to 19 million people to Europe by 2050. Scientists believe that 2024 could be even hotter than 2023, with a 95% chance of that happening given climate change and El Niño.
