An important event took place in Kyiv, highlighting the close cooperation between Ukraine and Israel in the field of education and preserving the memory of past tragedies.
Deputy Ambassador of Israel Liron Finkelstein opened the annual seminar for teachersorganized “Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies” in cooperation with the Israel Memorial “Yad Vashem”.
This seminar, supported by various international projects such as “Memory Traces” And Vaad of Ukrainebrings together educators from all over Ukraine to study the methods and practices of teaching the Holocaust in schools and universities.
In her opening remarks, Liron Finkelstein emphasized the importance of this seminar, especially in light of recent events. She recalled that after the Holocaust, the world promised “Never Again,” but the tragic events of October 7, when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, marked the day when the largest number of Jews were killed since World War II. This comparison, Liron said, underscores that “never again” is happening right now, and Israel will strive to bring peace back to its borders and rebuild all that was destroyed.

The Kyiv seminar also focused on the relevance of studying the history of the Holocaust in the context of the current Russian-Ukrainian war. Participants discussed how the current tragedies experienced by Ukraine and Israel can be linked to the lessons of the past and why it is so important to preserve the memory of the Holocaust in the context of ongoing conflicts.
Cooperation between Ukraine and Israel in this area has deep historical roots. Both countries have experienced tragedies associated with mass murder and genocide, and both peoples understand the importance of preserving the memory of these events. In light of modern challenges, when both countries are again faced with violence and terror, the exchange of experience and knowledge between Ukraine and Israel takes on special significance.
Historical cooperation between Ukraine and Israel on Holocaust remembrance began immediately after Ukraine gained independence. Since then, both countries have worked hard to make the topic part of public consciousness in order to prevent such tragedies from happening again. Today, as Israel and Ukraine face renewed threats, this work is even more urgent.
Close cooperation in education and memory not only helps strengthen ties between Ukraine and Israel, but also provides an opportunity to better understand contemporary challenges. As Liron Finkelstein emphasized, despite all the difficulties, both countries will continue to work together to preserve peace and protect their peoples.
