President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky September 25, 2024 spoke at a meeting of the UN Security Council, accusing Russia of “making” North Korea and Iran accomplices in its crimes, including the murder of Ukrainian citizensHe stressed that this “a rather indicative choice of friends for the Russian regime”.
Zelensky announced plans to hold another forum in November on peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia, inviting China and Brazil to participate. He called on the international community to support his proposal formula of peace and “force Russia to cease fire.”
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Zelensky also warned of a possible nuclear catastrophe in the event of attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities, stating that Russia has such plans. He noted that “Russia will not be able to overcome the resistance of the Ukrainian people on the battlefield and is looking for other ways to break the spirit of the Ukrainians,” in particular, by attacking energy facilities.
“To date, the Russian Federation has destroyed all Ukrainian thermal power plants and most hydroelectric power plants,” the president added. He said that Putin “preparing for winter,” hoping to torment millions of Ukrainians, including “ordinary families, women, children… ordinary cities,” leaving them in “darkness and cold.”
Zelensky also cited the horrific events that took place at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. “On the night of March 4, 2022… I was informed that Russian tanks were firing directly at the buildings of our Ukrainian nuclear power plant,” he recalled, pointing to Zaporizhzhya NPP“the largest in Europe.” He described it as “one of the most terrifying moments of the war,” when no one could have known what catastrophic consequences the strikes on the nuclear facility would have.
According to Zelensky, “this is the main source of radiation hazard in Europe, and possibly in the world.” He stressed that first point his formulas of peace concerns nuclear safety and recalled its strategy, proposed in the fall of 2022, supported by almost one hundred countries and international organizations.
“Unfortunately, it is impossible to truly and fairly resolve issues of war and peace in the UN, because too much in the Security Council depends on the right of veto. When the aggressor uses the right of veto, the UN is powerless to stop the war,” the president noted.
Zelensky continued that alternative or half-hearted settlement plans “ignore the reality and interests of Ukrainians who suffer the most from the war,” creating Putin political space to continue the conflict.
“Russia, a country more than twenty times larger than Ukraine in territory, still wants more land,” he said, describing this as madness. He added that “Russia has found special friends for this – North Korea and Iran,” which, in his opinion, speaks for itself. “Every neighbor of Russia in Europe and Central Asia feels that war can come to them,” the president concluded, drawing attention to the possible losses.
Zelensky's speech could be perceived as a call for the international community to pay attention to supporting Ukraine and opposing Iran and the DPRK. This could lead to increased international pressure on Iran and expanded sanctions against it, which would benefit Israel's interests.
Moreover, Zelensky’s statement could be used by Israel to further justify its actions in the field of defense and security, including possible preventive measures against Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Supporting Ukraine in this context could strengthen international understanding and agreement with Israel’s actions. The involvement of Iran and the DPRK in crimes against Ukraine could also strengthen the positions of terrorist groups supported by these countries, increasing the risks for Israel and requiring more active actions in the fight against terrorism.
Finally, cooperation between Iran, North Korea, and Russia could change the dynamics of global security and lead to new alliances, which would require Israel to adapt its foreign policy and security strategy. Overall, openly accusing Iran and North Korea of complicity in Russian crimes creates an opportunity for Israel to use this situation to strengthen its position both regionally and internationally.
