Yair Golan, 61, was born and raised in Rishon LeZion and currently lives in Rosh HaAyin. He was drafted into the army in 1980. As a young officer in the paratroopers, he stood out as an outstanding commander. In 1997, while commanding the Eastern Brigade on the border with Lebanon, he was wounded in a battle with Hezbollah. Despite his serious injury, he continued to lead the battle.
In 2000, Golan was appointed commander of the Nahal Infantry Brigade. He was one of the leaders of the first military operations in the West Bank during the Intifada and played a major role in the IDF's recapture of cities during Operation Defensive Shield.
In 2004, in the midst of a major General Staff exercise, he warned Chief of Staff Moshe Yaalon that the IDF's operational plan to counter Hezbollah was not serious because insufficient forces had been allocated to implement it. Golan repeatedly angered the IDF brass with his excessive independence.
During Golan's tenure as head of the Home Front Command (2008-2011), Netanyahu came to know him well and was impressed by his character and intellectual abilities. Netanyahu even considered appointing Golan as IDF Chief of Staff instead of the long-serving generals, but Ya'alon, then Defense Minister, chose to appoint Gadi Eisenkot.
In 2014, Golan became deputy chief of staff of the IDF, but two years later he gave his famous speech warning of trends in Israel reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s, and the prospect of heading the staff was closed to him.
After leaving the army, he began a tortuous political path that ended in the Meretz party. When he announced in 2022 that he would run for the party's leadership, he encountered fierce resistance from within it. In the end, Golan lost the primaries. Meretz was led by Zehava Galon. The party failed to enter the Knesset in the November 1 elections.
