The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon reported that an Israeli Merkava tank attacked a UNIFIL observation post in the south of the country, near Kfarkela. The attack damaged two cameras and a watchtower. The leadership of the peacekeepers expressed concern and called on Israel to respect the inviolability of UN facilities.

Israeli authorities say they have repeatedly called on UNIFIL to evacuate its personnel and warned them of possible attacks by speaking directly to the mission commander. The UNIFIL representative stressed that the peacekeepers are fulfilling their mandate and monitoring the situation in the region, despite Israeli demands to retreat. Prime Minister Netanyahu called the shooting allegations false.

UNIFIL has been present in southern Lebanon since 1978, following a UN Security Council resolution. The mission was intended to reduce tensions on the border, but did not rule out Israeli missile attacks from Lebanon. The head of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations noted that the September events forced the peacekeepers to stay in shelters.
