What Is Purim?
Purim is one of the most joyful holidays in the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the rescue of Jews in the Persian Empire from the evil plot of Haman, who sought to destroy them. Thanks to the bravery of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai, the plot was uncovered, and Haman himself was executed.
This holiday symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, the power of faith, and the unity of the people.
Main Purim Traditions
- Reading the Scroll of Esther (Megillat Esther) in synagogues
- Giving gifts to friends and donations to the needy
- Festive meals with wine and traditional treats, such as triangular “Haman’s ears” (hamantaschen)
- Costume parades and carnivals, which have become a symbol of Purim
- Lively celebrations, music, dancing, and fun
In Israel, Purim is celebrated in a special way – the streets are filled with people in colorful costumes, mass carnivals and parties take place. It’s a time of joy, transformation, and celebration, where you can become any character and forget about everyday worries.
This year, the holiday has become even more special for the Ukrainian community in Israel. Two events – UA PURIM PARTY in Tel Aviv and Purim – Time for “Ravnovesie” in Haifa – bring together the traditions of both nations.
Where will you spend the evening of March 16 and 18? The choice is yours! But remember: you might not get another chance.
