At the front, Ukraine is actively using radio-controlled armored vehicles, which are becoming essential for saving infantry. These technologies are used in conditions of active operation of Russian drones, and, according to The Independent on September 22, 2025, allow for performing dangerous tasks, reducing the risk for soldiers.
According to the information, these vehicles resemble miniature tanks and have the following functionalities:
- transportation of ammunition and other necessary materials;
- mine clearance;
- evacuation of wounded or deceased.
The commander of the 20th brigade “Lyubart” with the call sign “Miami” emphasizes that although a person can control the vehicle, it is associated with high risks.
The cost of remotely controlled vehicles ranges from $1,000 to $64,000 depending on their size and capabilities, most of them manufactured by Ukrainian producers. The use of such technologies on the battlefield is not a new practice. Even during World War II, Germany used mini-tanks “Goliath,” and modern countries like the USA and China have also developed similar devices. However, the widespread implementation in Ukraine along the extensive front line makes this experience unique.
How they work at the front
Soldier Akim and his group successfully combine robotized vehicles with drones. The drone first explores the route, after which the vehicle, capable of carrying up to 200 kg, delivers ammunition, water, fuel, and food to the front. The movement of the equipment is slow, minimizing risks for soldiers.
According to Akim, any action by a drone or robot means that one of the fighters does not need to expose themselves to danger.
Challenges and upgrades
However, robotic vehicles also have weaknesses: they move slowly and openly, making them susceptible to shelling. To improve durability, soldiers are starting to use metal grids and traverses for mine detection, and new models are being refined based on feedback from the front.
The average cost of equipment in the “Miami” platoon is about 400,000 hryvnias (approximately $9,700). Against the backdrop of losses, when several units are destroyed in a week, funding such technologies becomes a serious challenge for the command.
Work at the front
Regarding prospects, the Ukrainian army continues to introduce new models of robotic vehicles, striving to expand their use and ensure the safety of its fighters. This creation is stimulated against the backdrop of hostilities, leading to constant improvement of the devices.
It also turned out that recently the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine approved the use of ground robotic complexes “Gimli” in the Defense Forces units. These versatile platforms are designed to perform a variety of tasks in the complex conditions of modern military conflicts.
Trends in the development and adaptation of such technologies are becoming an important aspect in the course of the current war.
