Turkey is set to seek formal accession to a genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Turkey has criticized Israel for bombing Gaza in its war on Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.
Turkish President Erdogan supports the Palestinian cause and condemns Israel for its “barbarity” and its intention to continue its policy of mass murder. The International Court of Justice has called on Israel to take measures during the offensive to prevent genocide and ensure food supplies for the people of Gaza.
Turkey has criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza. Hamas has the backing of Iran, which has accused Israel of killing Hamas leader Haniyeh, sparking tensions and the threat of war.
Erdogan condemned Haniyeh's killing as a “dastardly act” aimed at undermining the Palestinian cause. The Turkish leader compared Netanyahu to Hitler and demanded that Israel be punished. South Africa filed a lawsuit at the UN court, accusing Israel of violating the convention.
Many countries support the case against Israel, but the US, UK and others oppose it. Turkey wants to join the case in court. The International Court of Justice must approve their application.
