Turkey, striving to strengthen its air forces, has proposed ways to European partners and the US for quickly acquiring modern fighters. This step is aimed at keeping up with regional competitors such as Israel.
New Horizons for Ankara
As a NATO member with one of the largest armed forces, Turkey is seeking opportunities to update its outdated fleet. In July, a preliminary agreement was signed for the supply of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. However, Washington’s sanctions are currently blocking the acquisition of American F-35s.
Officials note that recent Israeli strikes on neighboring countries have revealed Ankara’s vulnerabilities. This has prompted Turkey to strengthen its air forces to counter potential threats.
Diplomatic Maneuvers
President Erdogan sharply criticized Israeli attacks in the Middle East, which worsened relations between the countries. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed concern over Turkish bases and support in Syria.
According to sources, Turkey is close to an agreement with the UK and other European countries to acquire 12 used Typhoon aircraft. The Eurofighter consortium is ready to provide 28 new aircraft after the final contract.
High-Level Negotiations
Erdogan plans to discuss the details of the deal in Qatar and Oman. The main issues are the number of aircraft, price, and delivery timelines. Visits by the UK Prime Minister and the German Chancellor to Turkey could be key to concluding agreements.
A UK representative stated that a memorandum of understanding with Turkey paves the way for a major order. Germany also supports the acquisition of aircraft, and the deal could be concluded within a year.
Challenges with the F-35
The acquisition of the F-35 for Turkey is complicated by US sanctions due to the purchase of Russian S-400s. Erdogan hopes for improved relations with Washington to overcome this obstacle.
Ankara is considering proposing a plan that may include waiving CAATSA sanctions. This could enhance defense cooperation with the US and win the favor of Congress.
A State Department representative noted that the Trump administration is seeking creative solutions to these issues, emphasizing Turkey’s strategic importance.
Looking to the Future
Turkey is also considering purchasing 40 F-16 fighters, but negotiations are hampered by the desire to acquire more modern F-35s. In response to the embargo, Ankara is developing its own KAAN stealth fighter, but its implementation will take years.
Amid concerns of a broader war in the Middle East, Turkey is accelerating missile production. Erdogan expressed hope for a rapid increase in production, highlighting the country’s desire to strengthen its defense capabilities.
