In Israel, according to the state comptroller, the purchasing power of the population is lower than in other countries. The report notes that food prices are constantly rising, but the government is not taking measures to improve the situation. The interministerial commission created to combat high prices held only 7 meetings, and after February 2024 did not meet at all.
Israelis can afford fewer goods on their salary compared to citizens of other countries. In 2022, purchasing power in Israel was 17% lower than in OECD countries, 8% lower than in Europe, and 43% lower than in the United States. This creates large differences in the availability of goods for the population.
The State Comptroller also drew attention to the dominance of a few companies in the product market, which leads to monopolization and inflated prices. The government was called upon to start fighting monopolies and market concentration to improve the situation for the population.
