Thousands of military personnel in Israel are forced to stop serving due to mental problems

The IDF said that thousands of Israeli soldiers have stopped serving in combat units due to mental disorders since October 7, 2023. There has been an alarming rise in military suicides, from 17 in 2023 to 21 in 2024, the highest in several years.

Of the 21 soldiers who committed suicide in 2024, 12 were reservists, which may be due to an increase in the number of reservists in the service over the past year and a half. Suicide has become the second leading cause of death in the Israeli army, ahead of disease and accidents.

Over the past two years, 807 soldiers have died in the line of duty, including 11 killed in terrorist attacks last year. Service in the Israeli army remains very dangerous and requires increased attention to the mental health of military personnel.
