Western allies of Ukraine have developed a preliminary plan for its protection in case of the conflict’s conclusion, reports the Financial Times on August 26, 2025, citing its sources.
According to the information provided by the publication’s interlocutors, three lines of defense are proposed.
- The first is a demilitarized zone, which may be patrolled by peacekeepers from a third country in agreement with Kyiv and Moscow.
- The second line includes Ukrainian military forces that are “trained and armed by NATO.”
- The third line consists of European “deterrence forces” stationed away from the border, with support from American troops from the rear.
The publication also reminds that the US authorities have repeatedly emphasized their reluctance to send their military to Ukraine. However, the US is ready to assist by providing intelligence and other information.
Even with American assistance, the public and politicians in several European countries remain concerned about the possible deployment of troops on Ukrainian territory.
At least 10 countries, as reported by Bloomberg, have expressed readiness to send their military to Ukraine. The discussion of security guarantees for Ukraine, including the possible deployment of foreign troops on its territory, intensified after the meeting of Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump in Washington.
