The US plans to use the weakening of Hezbollah in Lebanon to elect a new president, Axios reports. Among the candidates for the position is General Joseph Aoun, the commander of the Lebanese armed forces who is backed by the United States and France.
The political system in Lebanon is based on the distribution of power between different religious groups, and the president is usually a Christian. However, in 2022, the term of office of former President Michel Aoun, who had close ties to the terrorist organization Hezbollah, ended. Since then, the Lebanese parliament has been unable to elect a president due to differences with former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Axios clarifies that now is the opportunity for the United States and its allies to support the candidacy of Joseph Aoun for the presidency of Lebanon.
