US diplomats have revoked a reward for helping to extradite Syrian rebel leader al-Sharaa (al-Julani), who was previously “considered a terrorist.” This happened as part of their meeting with rebels in Damascus at the end of December. The meeting was successful and an agreement with constructive potential was reached.
The delegation also discussed the principles of the transition process in Syria with representatives of the public and addressed the issue of missing Americans. They raised the issue of lifting sanctions against Syria and removing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of terrorist organizations, but the press conference was canceled due to security.
Amid fears that Türkiye will invade northern Syria, President Erdogan also intends to travel to Damascus and meet with al-Julani. At the same time, The Wall Street Journal warns of a “new axis” of Sunni Islamists involving Turkey, which could become a serious danger in the region.
