US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood is calling on UN Security Council member states that have influence over Iran to increase pressure on it and stop the escalation of the conflict related to attacks on Israel. He said this at a UN Security Council meeting held on Wednesday at Iran's request to discuss the liquidation of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
Wood stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself against attacks by Hezbollah and other terrorists, and pointed to Israel's response to the shelling of Majdal Shams that killed children and teenagers. He stressed that Hezbollah was responsible for the attack, which was carried out using Iranian weapons from the group's Lebanese base.
The diplomat also clarified that the United States was not involved in the operation and has no independent confirmation of Hamas' claims about Haniyeh's death. He called on the Security Council to send a clear signal to Hezbollah, supporting Israel in defending itself against its constant attacks.
According to him, a ceasefire agreement is the best way to reduce the suffering of the Palestinian people and achieve stability in the region. “Therefore, the United States will continue to work with Egypt, Qatar and other regional partners to achieve such an agreement,” he stressed.
Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeed Irawan called the killing of the Hamas leader a “cowardly act.” He noted that the act was another example of terrorism and sabotage carried out by Israel against Palestinians and their supporters in the region and beyond.
Israel's deputy envoy Brett Jonathan called the meeting, convened by Russia, China and Algeria, “hypocrisy at the highest level” and held at the request of “the world's leading sponsor of terrorism,” referring to Iran. He noted that the Iranian regime uses its allies — Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah — to attack Israel and its citizens.
Referring to the UN response to the shelling of the Golan Heights from Lebanon, which killed children and teenagers, he said: “All that has been heard is expressions of concern about the escalation and calls on both sides, again equating a democratic UN member state with a brutal terrorist organisation, to call for restraint.”
Those who sincerely seek stability in the region should welcome the removal of brutal terrorists, not call for restraint on both sides. Russia, China, Algeria and some non-members of the Security Council, including Syria, have condemned Haniyeh’s killing.
