The UN Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting at the request of Iran on October 28, 2024. Tehran wants to discuss the shelling of Israel that the IDF carried out on the country's military facilities on the night of October 26.
The representative of Iran sent a letter to the Chairman of the UN Security Council (Switzerland) and the organization's Secretary General Antonio Guterres. It said: “Iran requests the President of the Security Council to convene an emergency meeting to address the gross violations and illegal actions in order to hold this criminal regime accountable.” He also called on Guterres and the Security Council to “take a strong position and strongly condemn” Israel to show that “violations of international law and the UN Charter” will not be left unanswered.
Iran has said it reserves the right to lawfully respond to such attacks at the appropriate time, citing UN principles and international law. On the morning of October 26, Israel carried out airstrikes on several targets in Khuzestan province and near Tehran, including missile and air defense factories. Israel announced the attack as “a response to months of continuous attacks,” while Iran promised a “proportionate response.” It was also reported that Iran, through intermediaries, conveyed to Israel that it was not going to respond to the attack.
The US and UK expressed support for Israel after the attack on Iran. The Pentagon said it will continue to protect Israel and other partners in the Middle East from threats from Iran and its proxies. London said Iran should not respond to the Israeli attack.
