Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov seems to be opening a new round of panic among Russians living in Israel.

“… we suggest that those citizens even think about… leaving this territory while such opportunities exist…”

.......

His last statement (October 3, 2024 published by Russian media) that Russians should “think about leaving the country while you have the opportunity”looks like the first step towards a mass exodus. This recommendation was made against the backdrop of an extremely tense situation in the Middle East, with Israel and Iran on the brink of military conflict, and Israeli authorities advising their citizens to be prepared to take shelter in bomb shelters.

Viktorov recalled that since “October last year” Russian authorities have strongly recommended that their citizens refrain from traveling to Israel unless there are humanitarian or other urgent reasons. Now the diplomat-type added that “the situation has deteriorated so much” that it is worth not just avoiding travel, but “seriously considering the option of returning home.”

His words show clear signs of panic and preparation for the worst: “before coming to Israel or deciding to stay, you need to think hard about how justified it is and whether it’s worth risking lives and health”.

He further emphasized that the Russian embassy will closely monitor the situation, mentioning the restriction of flights by Russian airlines, although “sometimes exceptions are made”. In fact, the ambassador not only recommended that the Russians flee, but also “recommended” escape routes while regular flights were still available.

Mass departure of precisely “Russian citizens”, the number of whom are in Israel (according to some estimates) is at least 200 thousand people, can seriously affect public sentiment.

Israelis may perceive this as a cowardly step and betrayal. Especially considering that most Israelis continue to live under constant threats and are in no hurry to leave their country. If Russian citizens suddenly begin to evacuate en masse, this could cause a wave of indignation among those who remain to defend their homeland.

What will others think? Most likely, this step will cause discontent and condemnation. The situation is reminiscent of the famous phrase “The rats are the first to jump ship”when those who could benefit choose to run away. Thus, the Russian ambassador is effectively initiating a mass exodus, showing that their own “safety” is more important than supporting the country in which they live.

The ambassador’s statement itself suggests double standards: Russia, which supports regimes that threaten Israel’s security, is now trying to “protect” its citizens from possible consequences.
