Alon Kaminer's meeting with Pope Francis took place in the Vatican. This happened on Thursday, October 31st. Alon, an industrial engineering student from Pardesiya (a district of Netanya), was seriously wounded at the beginning of the war. While on patrol, a grenade accidentally exploded on the boat, throwing him 1.5 meters away. As a result of this incident, he had to have his arms and leg partially amputated and also lost sight in one eye.
Alon was in an induced coma at Sheba Hospital (Tel Hashomer) for three weeks. He underwent bandage changes every day under general anesthesia to stabilize his condition.
After difficult operations and a struggle for life, Alon began to provide assistance to other wounded people coming to the hospital. His individual optimism and enthusiasm help him cope with his injuries and continue to live. He emphasizes that Israel has many strong soldiers who are willing to help each other. He will soon be discharged from the hospital and return home to Tel Aviv.
The meeting with Pope Francis was part of a delegation from Sheba Hospital, which was represented by General Director Itzhak Kreis and Head of International Department Yoel Har-Even. They discussed with the pontiff the possibilities of cooperation in the field of medicine for peaceful purposes. Kreis noted that even in a short conversation with the pontiff, important topics were touched upon, including the issue of hostages.
