On December 25, 2024, Pope Francis, in his New Year's address Urbi et Orbi, remembered the war in Ukraine and called on Kyiv and Moscow for peace negotiations.

He mentioned the need for courage to open dialogue and close the window for negotiations. Francis called for an end to the sounds of weapons in devastated Ukraine directly from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. He also called for gestures of dialogue and meetings to achieve a just and lasting peace.
