The Pope called on Kyiv and Moscow to start negotiations in a Christmas address.

On December 25, 2024, Pope Francis, in his New Year's address Urbi et Orbi, remembered the war in Ukraine and called on Kyiv and Moscow for peace negotiations.

He mentioned the need for courage to open dialogue and close the window for negotiations. Francis called for an end to the sounds of weapons in devastated Ukraine directly from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. He also called for gestures of dialogue and meetings to achieve a just and lasting peace.

At this time, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of a ceasefire on all fronts by Christmas. He also prayed for peace in Ukraine, the Middle East (including “Palestine, Israel and Lebanon”), as well as Syria, Myanmar, South Sudan and all other places where people are suffering from war and violence.

Earlier, Pope Francis called Ukrainians and Russians “cousins” and called for peace. In his prayers, he expressed the hope that peoples could find common understanding with each other.
