Opposition leader Yair Lapid testified before the public committee on the October 7 failure. He denied claims that the political echelon was not informed about the potential to contain Hamas. Lapid spoke about warnings he received at a security briefing on August 21, 2023.
“I want to refute the often repeated claim that the IDF and the intelligence services did not properly inform the political echelon. They received information that the potential to deter Hamas no longer works as before,” he said.
The briefing focused on internal divisions in society, tensions and crisis. Lapid noted that Netanyahu had shown no interest in these issues, which had caused him concern. He also mentioned intelligence data confirming the high risk of attack, which the prime minister should have known.
Lapid then shared information about a conversation with the head of Shin Bet, who confirmed that warnings had been conveyed to both the president and the prime minister. In response, Likud issued a statement denying that the warnings had been given, saying that Lapid was “lying and is responsible for some of the problems in the country.”
Yesh Atid responded to Likud:
“Whoever, while in office, abandoned the citizens of Israel to certain death must take responsibility and resign. Netanyahu has ignored all warnings and is doing everything to avoid the creation of a state commission of inquiry so that we do not see the protocols he is tweeting about.”
