Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The list of applicants for 2024 includes 286 people. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) are also among the favorites.
However, Zelensky's chances of winning are slim due to the war in the country.
Russian dissident Alexei Navalny is also considered a potential candidate, but the prize will not be awarded posthumously.
Given the conflicts in Israel, Ukraine and Sudan in 2024, the Nobel Committee may focus on humanitarian organizations helping civilians in conflict zones. UNRWA could be one of those candidates, despite accusations from Israel that employees were involved in an attack on southern Israel. However, a UN investigation indicated that nine people were fired for their possible involvement in the attack.
The Nobel committee may also decide not to award anyone this year, as has happened 19 times already. According to the head of the Stockholm Peace Research Institute, Dan Smith, this option is also possible. The announcement of the laureates is due to take place on October 11.
Last year, Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize, honoring her work for women's rights in Iran.
