Israeli officials said the land operation on the Lebanese border would be limited in both time and scope, not affecting major cities in southern Lebanon. The purpose of the operation is to destroy Hezbollah positions along Israel's northern border for a subsequent diplomatic settlement in accordance with the UN resolution.
According to US officials, the White House understands and approves of such a plan, but remains concerned about the possibility of the Israeli army getting stuck in Lebanon or unexpectedly expanding the operation. They recalled Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, which was initially planned as a limited operation but ended up being a protracted one.
A US State Department spokesman stressed that military pressure can promote diplomacy, but can also have unintended consequences. It is important to consider that history already knows examples when limited military operations turned into long-term conflicts.
