The Knesset approved Ofir Katz's bill to disqualify parliamentary candidates on the basis of support for terrorism. 61 deputies voted for it, 31 voted against it. The new law will become more strict and will allow the disqualification of a candidate for supporting one terrorist and even for individual expressions of support.
Another change is to expand the ban on voting for those who supported the armed struggle against Israelis. Now the mechanism for disqualification will become more stringent, and it will be possible without approval by the Supreme Court, although an appeal to the court will remain possible. Ofir Katz said that the country is no longer ready to tolerate supporters of terror in parliament.
The opposition has dubbed the bill the “Opposition Repeal Act,” arguing that it aims to remove Arabs from the political arena and secure a majority for the current coalition. Despite criticism, the bill passed the first reading.
