International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan said Mongolia needs to be confronted about why it failed to comply with the arrest warrant for Russian dictator Putin. He explained that during the Russian President's visit to Mongolia, he was supposed to be arrested, but instead he was greeted with a red carpet. Mongolia will now have to make up its mind and show why the ICC ruling was ignored.
Karim Khan also noted that there is a negotiation process at the court level and that in case of refusal to cooperate, the judges will make their recommendations, but he does not want to make predictions, since everything is decided between the judges and the government of Mongolia. When asked about the possibility of Putin ending up in the dock in The Hague, Khan cited the example of the former Yugoslavia, where former leaders were nevertheless arrested and convicted.
The ICC is currently seeking the arrest of Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant. In addition, arrest warrants have been issued for three Hamas leaders. Recall that Mongolia has not complied with the ICC's decision to arrest Putin, which has caused outrage in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, threatening consequences for Ulaanbaatar.
Overall, Mongolia finds itself in a difficult situation where it will have to justify its decision to the ICC. It remains unknown how this situation will develop and what the consequences will be for all parties involved.
