The Israeli army IDF announced the elimination of five Palestinian militants, including the commander of the Islamic Jihad group, CNN reported on Monday, August 29.
The fighting began after an Israeli raid on August 28 aimed at destroying “Islamic-Iranian terrorist infrastructure.”
Among the dead was Muhammad Jabber, an Islamic Jihad leader accused by the IDF of terrorist attacks on civilians.
On the first day of the operation, the IDF said it had killed 12 militants and disarmed dozens of explosive devices. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned of the need to counter Iran's cooperation with Hamas and Hezbollah, which are trying to create an “eastern front” against Israel.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep concern” over Israel's operation, calling for “an immediate cessation of hostilities.”
