The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has encountered serious difficulties in its work in the Gaza Strip due to difficult conditions. The head of the organization, Philippe Lazzarini, said that they may reach a turning point when they can no longer continue their activities.
He noted that the agency faced financial and political threats to its existence, as well as a number of difficulties associated with the humanitarian situation in the region. Lazarini warned of the possible threat of famine and epidemics in Gaza as winter approaches and people's immune systems weaken.
According to the head of UNRWA, all donor countries, with the exception of the United States, have resumed funding the agency. However, US funding will be frozen until March 2025. In January, the agency was embroiled in a scandal over its employees' involvement in a hostage crisis in Israel, leading to a temporary funding freeze.
