Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was at the airport during the Israeli airstrike that killed at least six people. Ghebreyesus felt completely defenseless and described the situation as very chaotic and disorienting. He noted that there was no shelter at the airport and they were completely vulnerable. This happened on December 28, when the WHO delegation was leaving Sanaa after assessing the humanitarian situation in the country.
The Israeli military said it carried out strikes on military targets belonging to the Houthis based on intelligence reports. Ghebreyesus noted that his presence at the airport was known before the strike, but he stressed that it did not matter to him whether he was there or not. The WHO chief also said that the airport is a civilian facility and should not have been attacked.
The IDF claims the Houthis used the airport to smuggle Iranian weapons and meet with senior Iranian officials. According to the IDF, this is just one of many examples of civilian infrastructure being used for military purposes. The Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported deaths and injuries in the attack.
